Greenport (N.Y.) school officials unveiled a new gymnasium at the elementary school Wednesday afternoon.

Elementary School principal and director of Special Education, Joseph Tsaveras, said the new facility symbolizes the district’s dedication to “developing every child in our care.”

“It is with great joy and excitement that we gather here today to celebrate the grand opening of our elementary gym,” he said at Wednesday’s ribbon cutting ceremony. “This marks a significant milestone in the journey of our school and underscores an unwavering commitment to providing the best possible environment for our students to grow, learn and thrive here at Greenport.”

The $18 million project was approved by district voters in 2019 and includes plans for a new school library and a home and careers classroom. The district hosted a groundbreaking ceremony when construction began in May 2022. Rooms inside the existing school building were renovated to accommodate the new uses. Groundbreaking for the new Southside Stadium should be in late June or early July, city officials said Tuesday.

Jermaine Freeman, the mayor's chief of staff, spoke to the City Council during presentation of a development agreement on the project.

He said project master planner Jim Irwin of New City Properties has agreed to purchase property near the outfield of the stadium for over $5 million.

Mr. Irwin said he projects that buildings will be coming out of the ground at the same time the stadium is being built at the former Wheland Foundry/U.S. Pipe site. [The Chattanoogan]

Timberwolves part-owners Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore are targeting land near the Minneapolis Farmers Market for a new arena.

That's according to a story from longtime Minnesota sports reporter David Shama, who says the minority Wolves owners have an interest in land near 312 East Lyndale Avenue North.

The area near the farmers market has long-been mooted as a possible location for a sports arena or stadium, and was earmarked almost a decade ago as a site for Minnesota United's stadium, before the team ultimately decided to build in St. Paul.

The ongoing ownership dispute between the Rodriguez and Lore team and longtime owner Glen Taylor has raised questions about the future of the franchise. [SI.com]
