The Brownsville (N.Y.) Recreation Center just received $160 million to demolish and rebuild the aging infrastructure and rebuild the facility.

Mayor Eric Adams and NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue joined local leaders to announce a $160 million investment in the BRC.

The funding was included in the city's 2025 2025 fiscal year budget. The funding comes as four of the complex's five buildings sit idle after a renovation project stalled in November.

The project stalled after crews uncovered significant damage and deterioration severe enough to require the buildings be demolished and rebuilt.

"People thought we were going to walk away and we were clear we were not," said Mayor Adams. "We know what this center means and I know there were so many years of broken promises."Right now, summer programs for children, adults and seniors are being conducted in the remaining building that is open and outdoors in the adjoining field and basketball courts. Nationwide Arena and its nearby partner, the Greater Columbus Convention Center, need more than $170 million in repairs, according to their owner.

With a few exceptions, such as a new scoreboard and concession upgrades to the arena, the needs aren't sexy but rather involve basic infrastructure, including new roofs and HVAC equipment.

"Those facilities require attention, both to meet ongoing maintenance and structural issues and to make sure we continue to be competitive," said Ken Paul, executive director of the Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority, which owns the arena, the convention center and the Hilton Columbus Downtown. The Jam Urban Athletic Club is the first ninjastics and obstacle course program in Savannah.

The gym, located 1100 Eisenhower Drive, will hold its Grand Opening Party on Saturday.

"You don't have to be good at sports," said owner Marine Pozzo-Whitmore. "We're going to teach you how to enjoy sports and fitness." [WJCL]
