“We were just going to do a pole barn, some place where the kids could go work out,” athletic director Darren Shryock said.
But the deeper the school got into the project, the bigger it thought.
“We thought we could do it for about $400,000, but people just kept being so generous, so we were able to do more and more,” Shryock said. “It's the Taj Mahal now. It's considerably more than what we anticipated.”
A year after breaking ground, workers are putting final touches on the $1.6 million, 6,000-square foot building. The Ty Hart Memorial Fitness Center – named after the former Stayton three-sport athlete who died in a helicopter crash while serving with the U.S. Marines in 2016 – is slated for a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 6. The Grand Stade Hassan II, a colossal sporting venue currently under construction in Casablanca, Morocco, is set to redefine the concept of a modern stadium. Designed by architecture firm Oualalou + Choi in collaboration with global sports design experts Populous, this ambitious project is projected to become the largest football stadium in the world.
Drawing inspiration from the traditional Moroccan social gatherings known as ‘moussem,’ the stadium’s design incorporates a grand tented rooftop that dominates the forested landscape. This sculptural architectural feature not only provides shelter for the 115,000-capacity crowd but also creates a sense of community and togetherness. The rooftop will be made from a unique aluminum lattice. A ring of thirty-two stairways supports the roof and bowl, forming grand entrances framed by lush gardens elevated on 28-meter platforms.
