It’s nearly November which means that high-school students around this great nation are taking SATs, ACTs and other acronyms with college applications on the mind. Where do you want to spend your next four years? If you have a golf-centric brain, Vanderbilt just shot up the list.
Yes, that’s right. One of the best programs and facilities in golf just improved with this gorgeous $11-million renovation to the Vanderbilt Legends Club. Both the men’s and women’s squads call this locale home, and what a home it is.

There’s a new lobby, a hall of fame, a pro shop, dining rooms, a fitness area, outdoor lookouts and a revitalized locker room (watch out for Tom Kim there). It’s not just the building, however, as the Cleo and Lewis Conner, Sr. Short Game Practice Facility and driving range tee boxes have been fixed up, along with the putting greens which have been designed to replicate competitive play. Eastern Illinois volleyball will return to a sport-specific venue for the first time since the 1980s as the University has announced that the Panthers volleyball team will return to McAfee Gym as their home court beginning with the 2025 season.
The project is being made possible through the donation of Eastern Illinois alumnus Joe Gardella ('89) and the Gardella family. The volleyball facility will be housed in the South Gym of McAfee providing the Panthers program a volleyball only facility and create a home court advantage inside the historic building. Pending EIU Board of Trustee approval, the McAfee South Gym will be named the Gardella Family Volleyball Court.
"The commitment of Joe, Leta, and the entire Gardella family to EIU, the Charleston Community, and Women's athletics is truly inspiring. Returning intercollegiate athletics to McAfee—in the heart of campus—will enhance the campus experience for all of EIU's students—and most importantly create a new home for Panther Volleyball," said EIU President Dr. Jay Gatrell. Two weeks after Hamilton County leaders announced they'd look into the possibility of constructing a dome on Paycor Stadium, concepts were unveiled Tuesday proposing modern designs and new event opportunities.
But if the county wants an enclosed stadium, it'll come at a $1 billion cost.
"While it was a good, smart move to investigate this just a little bit ... absent an additional revenue source or an income stream, it would be, from a financial perspective, very challenging to enclose Paycor Stadium," Hamilton County Administrator Jeff Aluotto said at Tuesday's Board of Commissioner's staff meeting.
