Ground was broken on Thursday for an expansive new athletic and recreational facility in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood.
The Fieldhouse+ is a project of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester and the Martin Richard Foundation. Plans for the $70 million, 75,000-square-foot project in the Harbor Point neighborhood feature indoor athletic fields, a walking track, fitness and training rooms, classroom space, a theater and even a teaching kitchen.
Fundraising for the project has surpassed 80% of that stated goal on Thursday, when Gov. Maura Healey announced $12 million in additional state funding.
“It’s been a decade since Denise and I envisioned a place that would provide Boston kids with the world-class facilities and experiences they deserve. We are incredibly proud to be breaking ground and know we wouldn’t be here without the support of countless supporters and champions for this project,” said Bill Richard, co-founder of the Martin Richard Foundation. The University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota, has broken ground on an athletic complex that will bring football, soccer, softball, and track & field competition back to campus.
The $45 million Marauders Athletics Complex will be built east of the existing field house; the university hopes to complete construction in time for the fall 2027 NCAA Division II season.
The university says the project is a key component of Phase II of the university's $272 million Vision 2030 Capital Campaign.
For decades, University of Mary’s football, soccer, softball, and track & field teams have competed at venues across Bismarck. The Athletics Complex will enable these programs to return to campus. [American School & University]
