ASU Confirms Desert Financial Arena Renovations
The Arizons State Sun Devil men's and women's basketball programs could be in store for some major improvements at their home arena in the near future
ASU Athletic Director Graham Rossini talked to media on Thursday afternoon and confirmed that Desert Financial Arena will begin the renovation process as soon as after 2026 university graduations in May.
Renovations have already began in more subtle forms according to Rossini, but the true fan experience-based ones could be a multi-year process.
"We're hard at work on finalizing a plan for a multi-year renovation."
"That is continuing. We've already put about $10 million-plus into it over the last 18 months that most people wouldn't notice. It's more infrastructure, it's more mechanical, it's more electrical, life-safety systems, etcetera. That's kind of the foundation we need before we do some of the more fan-facing upgrades that we're planning on starting next summer. We want to get a complete plan finalized. We'll hopefully announce that here in very short order."
Prosser Completes Athletic Facility Upgrades With Community-Funded Levy
The Prosser (Wash.) School District has completed major upgrades to its athletic facilities using funds from a community-supported capital levy, creating new opportunities for both student athletes and local residents.
The district finished construction on eight brand-new tennis courts at Prosser High School, funded through a capital levy passed in February 2023 that raised more than $2 million for improvements and maintenance across the district.
Kim Casey, superintendent of Prosser School District, says the courts have been in use throughout the school year, with final details completed recently.
"So they started their spring sports March 1st and they were playing on them, however, only on the red with the black asphalt around them. The green was just done in the last 10 to 15 days," Casey said.
Groundbreaking Held for New Pella Indoor Recreation Facility
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Wednesday to formally celebrate the beginning of a nearly two year process to construct a new indoor recreation facility in Pella.
The event at the Pella Sports Park featured comments from leadership in the City of Pella, Vermeer, Pella Corporation, and PPI, and highlighted the beginning of construction of a $35 million project.
Mayor Don DeWaard says the finished product will be ready by the summer of 2027, and in the meantime, work will continue to fundraise for the effort, which he says is already completely paid for through private donations and $17 million in sales tax bonds.
Additionally, the land needed for the extension of University Street from 240th to 250th has been acquired, and pending federal approval, the road could be constructed in 2026.
The KNIA/KRLS Lil’ Big Red Radio was at Wednesday morning’s event for audio. Hear more about the Pella Indoor Recreation Center project on today’s and Friday’s Let’s Talk Pella programs.
