Plans for Indoor Boathouse and Sports Complex at Nathan Benderson Taking Shape
Sarasota County Commission got an update recently for plans for an indoor boathouse and sports complex at Nathan Benderson Park, a major addition at an already busy part of the Suncoast.
Nicole Rissler, the county’s director of Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources, told commissioners July 9 that Benderson has conducted focus groups, site visits to similar venues throughout the U.S. and has selected the architect -- WJ Architects -- for the project.
One of the big questions -- how much it will cost -- is still not completely clear. “We don’t have a perfect answer yet,” Rissler said. “Once we get full construction drawings, hopefully by the end of the year, we’ll be able to come back to you with that."
Dartmouth Plans Improvements to Hockey Facilities
The home of Dartmouth College’s hockey teams is undergoing a makeover that will bring upgrades for players and also promote equity between the men’s and women’s squads.
Plans for 50-year-old Thompson Arena call for an addition of just over 11,000 square feet and nearly 13,000 square feet of interior renovations to the existing space.
“This is all designed around a really enhanced experience for our student-athletes and also with efficiency of their time in mind,” said Mike Harrity, Dartmouth’s director of athletics and recreation.
New Indoor Sports Facility Opens Its Doors
Thanks to two local families who recently opened the Walk-Off Sports Facility here, Valley youth baseball and softball players, as well as adults, now have an indoor space created for athletes to grow, train, and prepare for their next level.
Located at 515 Main Street, Brawley, Walk-Off Sports offers indoor batting cages and strength and agility training in a climate-controlled facility open to individuals for their use or private, semi-private, and group training sessions.
The business is a sports facility featuring three retractable batting cages that open up to reveal a turf area for activities beyond batting.
