The Sandusky City Commission recently approved a contract to move forward with construction of the new Sandusky Recreation Center.
The contract, awarded to Janotta & Herner of Monroeville, will allow work to begin on a nearly 38,000-square-foot recreation center located at the former American Crayon site on Hayes Avenue.
The project’s total cost is $10.38 million, according to a news release.
Construction is expected to take 15 months, with groundbreaking anticipated in early 2026, the release said.
Jefferson Parish Opens $45M Sports Complex
Jefferson Parish is preparing to open a state-funded youth sports complex that parish leaders believe will establish the area as a standalone tourism destination. The John Alario Jr. Youth Sports Complex, located on Nicolle Boulevard in Avondale across from NOLA MotorSports Park, spans 147 acres and features four multipurpose artificial turf fields designed to accommodate baseball, softball, football, soccer, lacrosse, and rugby.
The facility also includes a sports shop, pavilion, concession stand, and covered restrooms. Construction is nearly complete, with the inaugural tournament scheduled for Feb. 21, when 60 baseball teams are expected to compete.
“This will be the first time visitors get off a plane with the destination being Jefferson Parish,” said Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng.
Detroit Approves $5.2M in Tax Breaks for Soccer Stadium, WNBA Arena With Youth Sports Components
Detroit City Council wrapped up its final formal session of 2025 by greenlighting tax breaks for two professional sports facilities that together represent nearly $300 million in development. Both projects include youth sports elements that helped secure community support, though they followed distinctly different approval processes.
Detroit City FC’s planned AlumniFi stadium in Corktown will be a $198 million development featuring a 15,000-seat venue, 421-space parking deck, and 76 apartment units. The project will occupy the site of the former Southwest Hospital at 20th Street and Michigan Avenue following demolition of the existing structure.
