Des Moines City Council Approves Funding for New Soccer Stadium

The Des Moines city council approved a special incentive package Monday night, clearing the final hurdle to fund Iowa's first professional soccer stadium.

The council's tax break is the final element needed to begin building the $90 million soccer stadium downtown.

The project, spearheaded by former Kum & Go owner Kyle Krause and the Iowa Soccer Development Foundation, was first announced more than six years ago. It includes the pro soccer stadium and a global plaza, located on a former superfund site just south of the downtown area. The stadium will be home to both men's and women's soccer teams.

Des Moines Mayor Connie Boesen said, "We see it as a great opportunity to take a superfund site and turn it into productive land and bring revenue and tax base not only to the city, but the county and school districts that are in Des Moines."
