Arkansas athletics director Hunter Yurachek cited a “dynamic shift” in college athletics toward revenue sharing and NIL funding as reasons a large-scale renovation of Bud Walton Arena has been put on the back burner.
As reported by Whole Hog Sports, university trustees approved architects and construction teams to analyze and evaluate Bud Walton Arena renovation designs in June 2023. The last cost projection for the project was around $150 million.
“I don’t foresee a major renovation to Bud Walton Arena any time in the foreseeable future,” Yurachek said Thursday. “It's definitively a lower priority. You'll remember that we were tracking toward a significant addition to Bogle Park for softball, a significant addition to Razorback Field for our women's soccer program and this significant renovation to Bud Walton Arena. We were actively fundraising for all three of those, and our fundraising goals have changed.”
Yurachek said the proposed $15 million to $20 million projects for soccer and softball will need to be paid for upfront through donations before they proceed.
“So we don’t have to take on any debt, we want to have all of the cash on hand before we start any one of those projects,” Yurachek said. “There’s not a great opportunity for financial return on that investment [for soccer and softball].”
The Courtside Club and media workroom at Bud Walton Arena were renovated last summer, exchanging the rooms reserved for on-court ticket holders and media members. That update took four months at a cost of $1.3 million, Matt Jones of Whole Hog Sports reported.
The arena's roof was replaced last year as part of a deferred maintenance list that also includes HVAC, plumbing, electrical and other repairs totaling an estimated $50 million to $60 million.
“We’ll continue to do little pieces of the facility, like the Courtside Club and the media room that we did,” Yurachek said. “We’ve just engaged an architect to look at our men’s and women’s basketball locker room area and that kind of behind-of-house area. How could we renovate that?”
According to Jones, the 2023 renovation plans approved by trustees called for the removal of around 1,500 to 2,000 seats to make way for more premium seating. The building has sold out season ticket packages each year since full capacity was restored for the 2021-22 season. A reseating of the arena before last season resulted in nearly $20 million in one-time or recurring funds for the Razorback Foundation.
