Urban Planners See Improvements in Plan for New 76ers Arena
More than a year after the Philadelphia 76ers abandoned plans for a $1.55 billion venue in Center City, the city’s professional basketball and hockey teams released initial renderings for a new arena in South Philadelphia.
The arena, expected to open in 2030, will be home to both the 76ers and the Philadelphia Flyers. Urban planning experts told The Daily Pennsylvanian that the South Philadelphia site is a welcome change from the previously proposed location.
Despite years of opposition from Chinatown residents and the broader community, the Philadelphia City Council approved a legislative package for the proposal in December 2024 after a series of public hearings, impact studies, protests, and negotiations.
South Dakota to Break Ground on New Gassen Field House
The University of South Dakota will break ground on the new Gassen Family Fieldhouse on Friday, Oct. 2, at 10 a.m. at 1337 N. Plum St., Vermillion.
The event is open to the public. The fieldhouse is named in honor of Bill Gassen, J.D. '08, '04, and Jill Gassen,'06, '04, both alumni of USD who were members of the track and field team.
The fieldhouse will be the home of track and field, cross country and triathlon. These teams having their own space will allow the DakotaDome to be converted to a year-round turf-down facility, creating more opportunities for USD's other sports teams and visitors to use the space.
Miami University Announces New Indoor Golf Facility
Miami University director of athletics David Sayler announced today that the RedHawks will officially open the Rick McVey Indoor Golf Facility in the spring of 2027. The facility will be located in a retrofitted university building off of Wells Mill Drive in Oxford and provide an 3,500-square-foot all-season home for Miami Golf.
The new, state of the art golf training center will feature three TrackMan bays equipped with industry-leading technology, two SAM PuttLab systems for advanced putting analysis, a dedicated putting green and chipping area and a fully equipped club fitting space. In addition to the performance areas, the facility will include a team lounge and dedicated coaches' offices, creating a centralized home for Miami Golf where players and coaches can train, prepare, develop, and build meaningful connections year-round. This facility will give Miami Golf the resources and infrastructure necessary to continue competing at the highest level of college golf.
