Despite rec and fitness centers across the country facing temporary closures amid the coronavirus pandemic, leaders are looking for new opportunities to keep their constituencies engaged and healthy.
Amid advisories calling for social distancing, the Marinette (Wis.) Community REC Center is one such facility. Despite the facility’s temporary closure, dedicated professionals are using the internet to engage their community, according to the EagleHerald.
“We (at the REC Center) are going to be a resource for hands-on recreational content on the internet,” Marinette director of tourism and marketing Melissa Ebsch told the EagleHerald.
Each day, REC Center staff are posting videos to the Marinette Recreation Department’s Facebook page — with rotating themes including recreational activities, education, arts and crafts and interactive ideas.
“Once a day, every day in order to help you get through this social distancing, come back to the City of Marinette Facebook page and I will give you an idea,” assistant recreation director Adrienne Lacy said. “It’s going to be something new each day.”
The Marinette videos have been shared as far as Alaska, where another rec department shared a video to their own Facebook page.
The Marinette plan addresses varied needs of a community, and expresses the myriad was recreation centers impact community wellbeing. Meanwhile, fitness studios around the country have already begun streaming home-based workout routines, addressing physical health while under lockdown.
