The United States Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, recently published a Public Health Report titled “Physical Activity: An Untapped Resource to Address Our Nation’s Mental Health Crisis Among Children and Adolescents.” The article serves as a call to action, advocating for greater recognition and utilization of physical activity as a tool to combat the growing mental health crisis. Dr. Murthy paints a dire picture of the reality that many young people currently face.

While the Surgeon General focuses on the K-12 population, it is important to acknowledge that this reality extends beyond the youth community. Students at the college and university level face significant mental health struggles. From 2016 to 2021, the percentages of students with significant symptoms of depression and anxiety each rose by 13 points or more, according to the annual Healthy Minds Study. This trend has continued into 2023, as a recent U.S. Census Bureau survey found that 50 percent of adults ages 18 to 24 reported anxiety and depression symptoms.
