Tottenham Hotspur of the UK’s Premier League is building the first stadium in the country that will feature two fields inside the same stadium bowl.
Pan Stadia reports that a retractable grass pitch will be used for soccer matches, but a synthetic turf field underneath will allow the venue to host NFL games, concerts and other events.
The retractable pitch will sit in three 3,000-ton steel trays. When the field retracts, the field will split into sections and roll underneath the southern stands to reveal the synthetic surface.
According to Pan Stadia, seams in the retractable pitch are undetectable once the field is restored.
The innovative feature will help to preserve each of the playing surfaces.
Here in North America, the Arizona Cardinals employ a similar tactic: University of Phoenix Stadium features a retractable natural grass playing surface that allows the turf to be grown and maintained outside the venue.
