Breaking Ground

Crews got to work in late June with a groundbreaking on the Barry P. Gossett Basketball Performance Center, a new practice facility for the University of Maryland men’s and women’s basketball teams. The 44,000-square-foot facility adjacent to the Xfinity Center will create a landmark on the northern edge of the Maryland campus in College Park. The Gossett Center will feature a dedicated practice court, a strength and conditioning facility, expanded locker rooms with cutting-edge technology, state-of-the-art athletic training areas with hydrotherapy, and dedicated space for film study and game-planning. There will also be large lounge areas and office space for both coaching staffs. Construction is expected to be complete prior to the fall 2025 semester.

First Pitch

A new hitting facility at Oregon State University’s Goss Stadium will be ready for the 2024 baseball season. The facility will allow for student-athlete access from both inside and outside Goss and will feature four hitting bays, a weight training area and a meeting room. The nearly 10,000-square-foot facility will have a mezzanine level, allowing for elevated viewing. It is set to be located directly beyond the center field fence, which will include a new batter’s eye.

The University of Southern California announced it will break ground later this year on Rawlinson Stadium, a $38 million project that will more than double seating for fans and feature new facilities for the women’s soccer and lacrosse programs. Rawlinson Stadium will replace and expand upon Soni McAlister Field, in use since 1998 with seating limited to about 1,000 spectators. Stadium features will include separate locker rooms for soccer and lacrosse, spectator viewing decks and social spaces, a state-of-the-art press box, restrooms, a box office, concessions stands and a formal entry plaza, a team meeting area, sports medicine space, a nutrition fueling bar, a locker room and meeting space for coaches, an LED video board and stadium-wide audio system, plus field lights and a natural grass playing surface.

The Iowa State University athletic department has unveiled plans to build a new indoor and outdoor tennis complex. A four-court indoor tennis facility will be purchased by the Iowa State Research Park and expanded to six courts in order to provide adequate space for collegiate singles play. Six new outdoor courts will also be built on the property. A new team building will be set up to the Cyclones’ liking and include a team room, locker room and training room. Once the facility is finished, it will be leased to the athletic department, pending approval from the Iowa Board of Regents in September. The outdoor courts are set to be completed in fall 2023, with the indoor courts and team building done by fall 2024.

Grand Openings

Club level seating options at Robins Stadium are expected to be complete in time for the University of Richmond’s 2023 football home opener in early September. The renovations to the west concourse will give Spider fans the option of premium cushioned chairback seating underneath the third-floor mezzanine, as well as access to exclusive food and beverage options in a climate-controlled hospitality suite situated behind the seating area.

Montana State University Billings has opened an indoor golf practice facility — the first permanent on-campus home for the men’s and women’s teams. Located in a remodeled racquetball court on the first floor of the PE Building, home to Alterowitz Gym, the more than $50,000, fully turfed space includes a state-of-the-art Foresight Sports system that will allow the teams to practice year-round.
