After a Miami Dolphins' player injured his Achilles during a 34-13 drubbing of the New York Jets this weekend at MetLife Stadium, Miami players blamed the poor quality of the playing surface at the stadium for the injury.
Jaelan Phillips, of the Dolphins, injured his right Achilles tendon in the game and had to carted off. Teammate Jevon Holland blamed the playing surface at MetLife.
“Since I’ve been in the league, I’ve heard the field is trash,” said Holland, whose 99-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first half helped lead Miami to the victory. “I don’t know the statistics or anything like that, but I do know turf does increase the chances of getting hurt.”
Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles on the same field just four snaps into his debut with New York on Sept. 11.
MetLife changed its surface before the season, but players have continued to voice their displeasure with the new turf.
“Since I’ve been in the league, I’ve heard the field is trash,” said Holland, whose 99-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first half helped lead Miami to the victory. “I don’t know the statistics or anything like that, but I do know turf does increase the chances of getting hurt.”
An anonymous poll of 85 NFL players recently conducted by The Athletic found that players disliked playing at MetLife more than any other stadium in the league.
