The Challenge
As the winningest program in college football history, the University of Michigan is used to the spotlight. So when University leaders determined it was time for a lighting system upgrade at the 107,601-seat Michigan Stadium – known as “The Big House” and recognized as one of the most iconic football stadiums in the country – they knew the stakes were high. They needed a lighting provider they could trust and a system that would be reliable, improve on-field light levels for better visibility, enhance high-definition broadcast quality, and utilize the most advanced special effects technology to take the entertainment experience to new heights.
The Solution
It wasn’t until 2010 that a permanent lighting system was installed at Michigan Stadium. Prior to that, the University used temporary lighting. Both of those solutions were provided by longtime partner Musco, with whom the University had worked since the 1980s. Project leaders at Michigan knew LED technology had revolutionized stadium lighting since 2010. While there were many new lighting providers, Michigan entrusted its project to Musco. The new TLC for LED® system at Michigan Stadium achieves improved uniformity for better visibility and broadcast quality, while consuming 31 percent less energy than the previous system. And Musco’s Show-Light® Pro special effects technology creates custom light shows with color-changing fixtures and light-to-music synchronization for a world-class entertainment experience.
“Adding the new Musco lighting system provides us with an additional tool to enhance the gameday atmosphere at Michigan Stadium. The ability to use special effects lighting in conjunction with video board content, key game moments, and special performances will create a unique and memorable experience for Michigan football fans of all ages.” — Jake Stocker, Director of Game Presentation & Fan Experience, University of Michigan
