As alcohol sales proliferate in university stadiums and arenas, the University of Maine has taken a different approach. For the 2025-26 season, Alfond Arena, home to Black Bears’ ice hockey, will designate an alcohol free zone.
According to Go Black Bears, the alcohol free zone will be Section DD bleachers. Those tickets will be available to fans who want a substance-free experience on a first-come, first-served basis. Section DD will also be available for season ticket presale purchase beginning today.
The alcohol-free seating section is just one of many fan experience upgrades that UMaine is bringing to Alfond Arena this year. The arena also expanded its alcohol service beyond the previous beer garden so that fans can bring beverages back to their seats. Other updates like new concession options, a renovated concourse and a new student band section will also greet fans this season.
Black Bears’ fans interested in purchasing drinks will be limited to a two-drink maximum and given a wristband upon entry.
Director of athletics Jude Killy spoke to the addition of both expanded alcohol sales and the alcohol-free seating section, saying, "Security and staff personnel will continuously monitor all seating locations, concessions and beer garden areas with heightened educational awareness campaigns communicating and promoting fan responsibility and self-regulation for alcohol consumption. UMaine remains committed to creating a welcoming, family-friendly, and responsible environment for all fans. We appreciate your cooperation as we work to enhance the game-day experience while maintaining safety and compliance during this expanded pilot program."
