Episcopal player's father charged with harassment
By Rick O'Brien; Inquirer Staff Writer

The father of an Episcopal Academy football player was charged with harassment and banned from campus for the team's season finale because of an incident after a football game Friday night.

Richard J. Butts, 51, was arrested and charged with summary harassment, said police in Newtown Township, Delaware County.

According to sources, Butts, the father of Churchmen senior standout Evan Butts, angrily confronted one of Malvern Prep's players and directed a racial slur at him after Episcopal's 49-21 home loss.

"Clearly, there is no place for this type of hateful speech and behavior at the Episcopal Academy, and this parent will not be permitted on campus for the upcoming EA-Haverford-AIS [Agnes Irwin School] weekend," the school said in a statement Wednesday.

The statement did not identify the parent.

Richard Butts could not be reached for comment. He was upset by what he believed was dangerous and unnecessary play by the Malvern player, sources said.
