BETHEL TWP., MIAMI COUNTY - The Miami County Sheriff's Office is investigating an alleged assault that happened when a parent confronted his son's football coach after a game Friday night.

Michael L. Mullins, of Tipp City, is accused of starting a fight with Kevin Finfrock, 50, of West Milton. Finfrock is head coach of the Bethel High School football team, where Mullins' son is a junior running back.

A school official alerted investigators Saturday morning.

"He wanted to report an altercation that occurred after the football game," Lt. Jamie Mc-Glinch said.

McGlinch wouldn't comment further on what happened, saying the matter was under investigation. Mullins contends the "unfortunate" incident was a misunderstanding among friends.

"I have a lot of admiration for (Finfrock)," Mullins said. "We are not enemies."

He said the altercation happened when he approached Finfrock at about 11 p.m., questioning why his son was benched for two quarters following a fumble.

"I was inquiring about the disciplinary action that was being handed out to my child," Mullins said.

He wouldn't comment on the specifics of the fight, which allegedly happened inside the school's bus barn.

"We acted inappropriately," he said. Mullins claims no kids were around when the incident happened.

McGlinch said his office hadn't spoken with Mullins yet, but that Fin-frock told them he wasn't interested in pursuing the matter.

"Depending on what we find out from any witnesses or the suspect, the case will undoubtedly go to the prosecutor," Mc-Glinch said.
