Madison - The state's college football fans can officially begin planning to watch Wisconsin and Louisiana State meet at Lambeau Field.

The UW Board of Regents on Friday approved the contract for the game, set to be played on Sept. 3, 2016.

"I'm very excited about this game, and I hope our fans are, too," UW athletic director Barry Alvarez said in a release. "We have a great working relationship with the Packers and Mark Murphy, and I want to thank them for all their help in getting this game scheduled."

Under the terms of the agreement, the Green Bay Packers will pay UW $3 million for the game. The Packers will keep game revenue. It would be the first time the Badgers have ever played a football game at Lambeau Field.

"We're honored to be able to host two storied college football programs at Lambeau Field," Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy said. "It will be an exciting weekend for football fans at our historic stadium. The Green Bay community will serve as an excellent host and we all look forward to seeing fans from both teams that weekend."

Under the terms of the deal, the game will be considered a Big Ten home game for the purposes of television rights.

According to the Packers, the game will mark the fourth time a college football game has been played at Lambeau Field. St. Norbert College twice hosted Fordham University in a Vince Lombardi Memorial Game, winning both contests. The games were staged in 1982 (14-10) and 1983 (18-9). St. Norbert also hosted Mankato State on Oct. 29, 1960, defeating the Indians, 29-14.

The 2016 game will mark the third consecutive season that UW opens against an SEC opponent. The Badgers and Tigers will kick off next season, on Aug. 30, 2014, at Reliant Stadium in Houston. In 2015, Wisconsin will face Alabama at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Sept. 5. In addition to the game vs. LSU, Wisconsin has completed its 2016 schedule with home games against Akron and Georgia State. The 2016 season is the first of the ninegame Big Ten schedule.
