$7.7 MILLION SWIMMING FACILITY loaded with amenities |
By Jennifer Mason The Virginian-Pilot The $7.7 million Southside Aquatics Center opened last week, and Norfolk residents can swim free there through Oct. 13. The 20,375 square-foot facility, at 1750 Campostella Road, features an indoor six-lane competition swimming pool, two diving boards, locker rooms, and family changing areas. Amenities include a two-story "twisty tube" slide, a zero-depth recreation and instructional area with play structures, handicap accessible plunge area, community rooms and a room for party rental. Councilman Paul R. Riddick said the facility will give the children in the Southside area "an opportunity to become swimmers and realize that swimming is a sport that can be enjoyed well into their senior years." Hours of operation now are 3 to 8 p.m. weekdays (closed Thursdays); 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Regular hours, beginning Oct. 14, are: 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays (closed Thursdays); 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. To use the center after Oct. 13, patrons must buy a Facility Use ID Card. The cost for Norfolk residents is $10 per year for ages 17 and younger; $20 per year for adults. The cost for non-residents is $50 a year. The card also provides access to Norfolk's 18 recreation centers and four other pools in Huntersville, Northside, Berkley and Chesterfield. Swim classes will be available for ages 6 months through adult at all skill levels, said Darrell R. Crittendon, director of Recreation, Parks & Open Space. Adults can participate in water fitness classes. Planning is in the works for a community grand opening celebration. The ceremonial event will include food, music, diving and synchronized swimming demonstrations, and a water fitness class. The date will be announced soon.
