Source: National Swimming Pool Foundation Classes will educate health officials about how to meet and inspect for compliance with the federal P&SS Act's requirements. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The National Swimming Pool Foundation® (NSPF®) is hosting 19 free National Pool and Spa Training Sessions, one longer Safety Event (also free), plus periodic webinars in 2011 to educate health officials about the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (P&SS Act). Training will be held in locations throughout the United States. A schedule of locations, dates, and times can be found at http://www.NSPF.org/Resources/spa_safety/Training.aspx. Contact Amanda Rogers to sign up at [email protected], or call 719-540-9119. Public health inspectors, aquatics managers, state and local health officials and regulators are encouraged to attend and participate in this critical learning opportunity. In September 2010, the NSPF® was awarded a Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) contract, through Erica Lane Enterprises, to help bring all public pools and spas into compliance with the P&SS Act. The NSPF-hosted National P&SS Act Training Sessions and Safety Event will include educational materials and demonstrations, methods of compliance, background on the federal law, the types and causes of entrapment, how to effectively conduct compliance inspections and how to educate facilities managers about compliance with the Act. In the coming months, NSPF will coordinate P&SS Act Training Sessions in conjunction with various state associations, including the National Environmental Health Association's (NEHA) Annual Educational Conference in Columbus, Ohio. The second National P&SS Act Safety Event (a 5-hour course) was held in concert with the Orlando Pool & Spa Show in Florida, on Feb. 10. A CPSC representative will be present to answer questions, and the event will be videotaped and subsequently posted on the web as a free resource for those who could not attend at http://www.nspf.org/Resources/spa_safety/Training.aspx. The National P&SS Act Training Sessions and Safety Events provide the useful technical information essential to meeting the CPSC's goal to educate state and local health officials on compliance procedures as outlined by guidance documents provided by the CPSC. The P&SS Act required all public pools and spas to come into compliance by December 19, 2008, and it is believed that many have not yet made the necessary changes.
