Republic FC Launches Community Design Competition for New MLS Stadium

“Citizen Architects” will have an opportunity to make a permanent mark on Sacramento’s MLS stadium

Sacramento, Calif., Sept. 19, 2017 – Sacramento Republic FC (Republic FC) today launched a Citizen Architect competition as part of the #BringItHome initiative to encourage fan participation in the planning of the new downtown Major League Soccer (MLS) stadium at The Railyards. The design competition reflects the club’s desire to ensure the fans and community have a strong presence in the overall design and experience of Republic FC’s planned MLS stadium.

“We want our MLS stadium to reflect Republic FC’s greatest competitive advantage: our fans,” said Republic FC Chairman and CEO Kevin Nagle. “The Citizen Architect competition reflects that spirit by providing our fans and community a new and creative opportunity to shape the overall design of their new home and the matchday experience.”

The Citizen Architect competition invites fans to submit design proposals for designated portions of the new stadium and surrounding plaza. Entries will be accepted through October 27, and the winning proposal will be announced in November and incorporated into the new stadium. Entries will be judged by a panel of design experts and influencers representative of the Sacramento region.

Submissions must meet specific criteria, including:

  • Feasibility: Will the proposal fit within the current stadium design plans, including considerations of cost (upfront and ongoing), circulation, safety and regulatory compliance?
  • Creativity: Will the proposal create a new, inspiring and attractive feature to the overall design?
  • Community: Will the proposal foster a greater sense of community among fans and celebrate the best of Sacramento?

Sacramento is currently one of 12 cities vying for four MLS expansion slots. MLS has indicated that it will announce at least two of the four expansion cities by the end of 2017.

Republic FC will ensure strong participation by local workers and local businesses in the construction and operation of the new stadium to deliver jobs and opportunities to our region. 

3. Farm-to-Field.

Republic FC will harness the renowned agricultural base of our region and build stadium concessions partnerships with a broad and diverse group of local farms, restaurants and breweries.

4. Citizen Architects.

Republic FC will challenge fans to submit design proposals for portions of the stadium and surrounding plaza to be developed by and for the public.

5. Seat at the Table.

Republic FC will ensure that fans have a direct and consistent audience with the Board via representatives selected by the fans.
