GEISENHEIM, GERMANY – A custom-designed LED lighting system being installed at VELTINS-Arena this summer will greatly improve visibility on the pitch, conserve energy, bring exciting new light shows, and enhance the quality of HD broadcasts.
The VELTINS-Arena has been home to FC Schalke 04 since opening in 2001, and has hosted the UEFA Champions League Final as well as five matches of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The existing lights are more than 15 years old, so the decision was made to replace it utilizing the cutting-edge technology of LED.
An extensive analysis of several different LED floodlight manufacturers was conducted before the decision was made to partner with U.S.-based Musco Lighting and have its Total Light Control—TLC for LED™ system installed at the arena. The system will be tailored precisely to the requirements and specifications at VELTINS-Arena, uses custom optics around each individual LED to deliver a more uniform distribution of light than conventional floodlight systems, and features patented baffles on the luminaires that virtually eliminate glare from affecting players and spectators.
The new system also will feature DMX controls integration, allowing each individual light fixture to synchronize with music to create innovative special effects and light shows. The system’s multi-zone orientation and aiming, which significantly reduces harsh shadows on the pitch and improves light uniformity throughout the arena, also significantly enhances the quality of high-definition (HD) television broadcasts.
In the event of a successful application by the German Football Association (DFB) for Euro 2024, the VELTINS-Arena is one of the selected venues to host matches. In addition to the lighting requirements of the German Soccer League, the new lighting also will meet the UEFA Elite A lighting standards from the 2019-2020 season.
