Leader in physical medicine solutions, Biodex has enhanced their balance testing and training devices, the Balance System SD and portable BioSway, to provide more accurate testing and more engaging training to patients and athletes.

June 13, Shirley NY – Balance testing and training is an important piece of the rehabilitation puzzle, from athletes recovering from a lower-body injury to older adults regaining mobility after a fall. Biodex Medical Systems, Inc., the creators of the Balance System SD, now offer new stabilization and gaming options, taking balance to new heights. Attendees of this year’s NATA AT Expo in Las Vegas will get a first-hand look at the latest technology.

For athletic trainers and coaches, safe return-to-play decisions could depend on accurate, objective balance measurements. Because of their tracking and reporting capabilities, the Balance System SD and BioSway are widely used by high schools, colleges and professional sports teams to add an objective balance assessment component to a concussion management program. The devices also help enhance performance by demonstrating functional deficits and challenging athletes to improve.

Based on the understanding that the most accurate and effective balance testing and training happens when an individual is not holding on, Biodex offers the FreeSway Handles for the Balance System SD. The FreeSway Handles are the only balance training option that allows users to feel stabilized and secure without impeding postural sway. Like balance training wheels, the handles “float” securely within support rings that catch the handles if a user sways too far or loses their balance.

Beyond testing, the FreeSway Handles help users reap full functional benefits of balance training exercise. Patients and athletes will progressively gain a better understanding of their sway envelope while performing training exercises on the system, which will carry over into athletic performance.

Increasingly used in rehab therapy to motivate people of all ages and drive better outcomes, gaming software is another new feature offered with the newly redesigned balance devices. In addition to the collection of single- and dual-tasking games included on the system, such as a Ball Maze and Catch Game, Biodex now offers Recovery Rapids – the river rapids adventure game from Games That Move You.

Recovery Rapids challenges users to power a boat downstream, steer around bends, collect items and avoid obstacles – all through weight-shifting on the computerized platform. Originally developed for upper extremities, Biodex partnered with Games That Move You to adapt the game to their balance devices to help enhance enjoyment during exercise sessions, as well as boost training outcomes through high-repetition practice.

“We are always thinking of how we can help trainers and therapists overcome challenges to get the best result in the shortest amount of time,” offers Ed Behan, Senior Vice President of Market Development at Biodex. “We’re excited to make these new tools available for the Balance System SD and BioSway.”
