(ST. LOUIS – Jan. 12, 2022) – Logan University has hired Brian Mahaffey, MD as the medical director for its brand-new Master’s in Athletic Training program, which prepares students to provide evidence-based, preventative and rehabilitative care in many health care capacities.

Dr. Mahaffey is a team physician for the St. Louis Cardinals as well as the team’s coordinator of Major League medical services, and medical director of Mercy Sports Medicine.  In his role at Logan, Dr. Mahaffey will help ensure the program keeps current with medical standards, present within courses, act as a preceptor for students’ clinical assignments, chair the program advisory board, and work with the program director to develop the program framework and assessment plan.

“The medical director role is key in advising the athletic training program, and Dr. Mahaffey’s professional experience in sports medicine will be invaluable to our faculty and students,” said Stephen Nickell, EdD, MA, ATC, sports and exercise science department chair and athletic training program director at Logan University.

Dr. Mahaffey graduated from the University of Missouri - Columbia (MU) School of Medicine, holds a Master of Science in Public Health from MU, completed a residency in family and community medicine at MU and a fellowship in sports medicine and academic medicine at MU, and earned a Primary Care Sports Medicine Certificate of Qualifications. Additionally, Dr. Mahaffey, who played baseball at Missouri State University (MSU), has been inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, the MSU Athletic Hall of Fame, and the MSU Academic Hall of Fame for Athletics.

Logan is currently accepting Master’s in Athletic Training program applications for the summer and fall 2022 terms. For more information, visit logan.edu/MAT.

Logan University is currently seeking accreditation for its new athletic training program and is not accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). The institution will be submitting a self-study to begin the accreditation process on July 1, 2022. Submission of the self-study and completion of an onsite review does not guarantee that the program will become accredited. Students who graduate from the program prior to accreditation WILL NOT be eligible to sit for the credentialing examination for athletic trainers and will not be eligible for licensure in most states.
