JLG Architects is excited to continue growth of its award-winning Sports Studio, welcoming Licensed Architect (CA) Jason Marshall as the newest Sport Principal.
Marshall, a former NHL defenseman, bolsters JLG’s already deep hockey bench. The firm is celebrating several recent wins, including the opening of Augustana University’s Midco Arena (2024), Sacred Heart University’s Martire Family Arena (2023), Colorado College Ed Robson Arena (2021), and upgrades to University of Minnesota’s 3M Arena at Ridder (2023). The firm was recently named the 2024 ENR Design Firm of the Year (Colorado, Wyoming, Dakotas), and earned recognition as the 2023 Global 100 Best Ice Hockey Arena Architects (Upper Midwest USA).Â
Marshall will expand JLG’s footprint by working from California, where the long-time Anaheim Ducks d-man is an ambassador for the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) Learn to Play program. He joins a national team of over 200 as an employee-owner, working directly with JLG’s Sports Studio leader, Tom Betti, AIA, NCARB, Principal Architect.
JLG’s Sports Studio is currently leading the design of the Fargo Sports Complex, Fargo, ND, Maple Grove Community Center, Maple Grove, MN, The Athletics Events Center at Dakota State University in Madison, SD, Mosaic Quarter in Tucson, AZ, Runestone Community Center addition in Alexandria, MN, and the New Lenox Crossroads Sports Complex, in New Lenox, Il – a $70 million, 100-acre outdoor sports complex.Â

Originally from Cranbrook, British Columbia, Marshall was drafted by the St. Louis Blues with the ninth pick in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, making his NHL debut with the Blues in 1991. Marshall’s NHL career also included stops in Anaheim (1994-2001), Washington (2001), Minnesota (2001-2004), and San Jose (2004).
After retiring from hockey in 2008, Marshall spent two years in the Architectural Technology program at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA, before transferring to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, CA, where he earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree in 2016. Prior to licensure, Marshall had completed a two-season internship at Woodley Architectural Group and three seasons alongside the renowned Canadian-born American architect, Frank Gehry, CC, FAIA. Gehry, once referred to as “the most important architect of our age” by Vanity Fair, is the designer of the National Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial. Marshall was employed by Gehry Partners until 2022, before transitioning to LPA, Inc. in Irvine, CA.

With his remote position at JLG Architects, Marshall will remain active in his role as an NHLPA ambassador, in addition to his roles as varsity hockey assistant coach at Santa Margarita Catholic High School and youth hockey coach for the Anaheim Ducks Jr. team in Irvine, CA – a position he has held since 2009.Â
