Evening events at Joseph B. Yost Stadium, Ellet Community Learning Center, will include innovative lighting enhancements to improve experiences for athletes and the community, as demonstrated during a recent light show at the venue.
The public demonstration was hosted by lighting manufacturer Midstream Lighting and electrical contractor STG Electric Services.
“It was exciting to show what this new LED lighting system can do,” said Frank McMillen of STG Electric. “Working with Midstream and Akron City Schools has been a pleasure, and we are proud to be part of a brighter future for Akron school athletics.”
The customized, easy-to-use controls system allows the user to set dynamic scenes with various levels of light, chasing lights, spotlights, and other effects that enhance not only the game itself, but also senior nights, band performances, and other special evening events.
The new LED lighting also improves live streaming of all games, so relatives watching from afar can see the players’ numbers and get a better view of the details on the field.
“These lights do more than illuminate the field,” McCarty said. “They illuminate once-in-a-lifetime experiences and enhance the memories made in the athletic arena. We take pride in our ability to ensure every project we serve meets or exceeds the standard light levels set by the IES for the sport and level of play.”
In partnership with Lightspec of Cleveland, Midstream Lighting, headquartered in Dayton, OH, designed and manufactured the energy-efficient, high-powered lighting system.Â
The lighting design will also save money on energy and operating costs, Ellet Facilities Manager Adam White said.
The former lighting system consisted of 96 obsolete metal halide fixtures. The new lighting system includes just 46 LED luminaires and will provide an energy savings of 63 percent.
Ellet Community Learning Center is one of 10 high schools in the Akron City School District. The old lighting system was more than 25 years old and was becoming nonfunctional. All high schools within the Akron district use the Ellet stadium.
