Southeast-based architecture and engineering firm Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) is proud to welcome former college athletics director John Hartwell as client relationship director to its sports architecture team, which was recently ranked #9 Top Sports Facility Architecture and AE Firms by Building Design + Construction.

Hartwell brings nearly three decades of leadership experience at the NCAA Division I level, highlighted by nearly 15 years as director of athletics for three FBS programs: the University of Louisiana Monroe, Utah State University and Troy University. Prior to his career in athletics, he obtained his CPA while working at Ernst & Young, demonstrating strong financial and business proficiency.

“John offers a unique perspective, having been in our clients’ shoes for many years,” GMC Vice President of Sports Yann Cowart said. “Not only does he bring tremendous experience, but also an approach that reflects GMC’s commitment to building communities and strengthening relationships that help those we serve thrive.”

During his time working in college athletics, Hartwell oversaw every aspect of major programs, ranging from facilities improvements, hiring and developing championship coaches, student-athlete welfare initiatives, national and conference involvement and more. In every facet, he has been committed not only to technical excellence but also to empowering the people around him and elevating team success.

“I am thrilled to join the dynamic team at GMC,” Hartwell said. “The sports architecture group has built a strong portfolio of projects throughout our footprint in the Southeast, and I look forward to further enhancing our current and future clients’ relationships.”

With a deep understanding of athletics from both a professional and personal perspective, Hartwell will bring valuable insight to GMC and its clients to support GMC’s continued growth as an industry leader in sports and recreation architecture.
