The Louisiana High School Coaches Association (LHSCA) hired Jessica Barber as the organization’s new director, making her the first woman to hold that position. The organization’s president said Barber’s predecessor, Eric Held, “left some big shoes to fill,” but Barber is up to the task.
In a statement, the LHSCA said, “Her appointment represents a historic and forward-looking step for the organization as it continues its mission to support, develop, and recognize high school coaches across Louisiana.”
According to NOLA.com, Barber has worked in coaching for 19 years at both the high school and the college level. She was the assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of Louisiana–Monroe and the University of Southern Mississippi. Barber coached at Edna Karr High School as well, leading the team to the state tournament in 2015 and 2016.
“I know I’m the first female and that comes with its own excitement and challenges,” said Barber. “Now, I am not the type of person who is going to make that such a big deal. I feel like I can sit in a room and hold conversations with football coaches. I also know when it’s time to listen.”
Current LHSCA president, Christopher Kovatch told Geaux Preps, “This is a role that requires the right fit- someone who can serve as a bridge between our high school coaches and the broader LHSCA community. Jessica checks all the boxes."Â
Barber described the director’s role as her dream job, combining both administrative work and athletics, and she beat out three other leading candidates for this dream job.
“By the time that we had finished her interview, I was 100% convinced that Jessica is that person,” said Kovatch. “Between her high school and college experience, she has had to work with people in all walks of life. She has proven to be successful in each venue.”
