An equipment failure in the sauna of a San Diego fitness center caused a fire, officials said.
As reported by KUSI-TV, the San Diego Fire Department said a call came in reporting the blaze around 6:20 a.m. Crews responded to the 3600 block of Midway Drive where there was heavy smoke billowing from the second floor of the structure.
The Victory MMA & Fitness Center was open when the fire initially started and people were inside the facility. Everyone evacuated before fire crews arrived.
Midway Drive between Kemper and Duke streets was closed in both directions as fire crews worked to put out the flames, the San Diego Tribune reported.
No damage estimate was immediately available. No injuries were reported.
“Firefighters searched the entire fitness center structure and no one was located inside,” the fire department reported.
As a precaution, San Diego police evacuated guests from the Wyndham Garden San Diego hotel on Sports Arena Boulevard, which is just north of the gym, a police spokesperson said.
The fire has since been extinguished. The fire department is investigating the fire.
