Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith could earn more than $1.5 million a year in salary and bonuses under his new proposed contract.

On top of a base salary of more than $940,000, Smith would be eligible for $630,000 in bonuses and perks. Last year, Smith's base salary was $857,000, but his pay could have totaled more than $1.3 million with all potential bonuses in his contract. OSU trustees are to vote on Friday on Smith's promotion and contract extension, which would expire in 2020.

Bonuses for athletic goals increase in the contract. For example, if a basketball team makes it to the Final Four or the football team plays in a major bowl game, Smith could receive bonuses up to $120,000. He could earn up to $120,000 more if teams win Big Ten championships. Both of those bonuses previously topped out at $100,000 a year.

If athletes meet academic goals, Smith could be paid another $60,000 a year, a $10,000 increase over the current contract. A new perk, related to Smith's new role as a university vice president, provides up to $50,000 a year for business achievements that aren't specified in the contract.

Other bonuses include $200,000 for dealing with reporters and attending promotional events, $14,000 a year to pay for two vehicles, $5,000 for his wife's travel expenses, a full membership for Smith and his family at a local country club, a social membership at another local country club, and full membership at the university's Faculty Club.

All of Smith's compensation is paid by the athletic department.
