Fundraising Friday: Girls' School Gym, UNLV Practice Facility Score Big Donations

Delaware philanthropist and real estate developer Anthony Fusco Sr.  has made a $5 million commitment to Ursuline Academy, a Catholic girls' school in Wilmington. According to delewarelive.com, the donation will pay for the total renovation of Laffey McHugh Gymnasium, originally constructed in 1980; create an expanded fitness center for students and faculty; improve  accessibility for those with disabilities; install new locker rooms and athletic offices; and add  tech that will support student academic and athletic experiences. To honor the gift, the largest in the school's 130-year history, Ursuline will name its new facility the Anthony N. Fusco Sr. Fitness & Health Center.

The University of Nevada Las Vegas athletic department  received a $6.5 million donation from Boyd Gaming Corporation and the Boyd family, UNLV announced Tuesday. The contribution to the “Rebel Up” campaign is the largest combined family and corporate gift in Runnin' Rebel athletics history, the school said in a news release cited by the cited by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The money will go toward the construction of the state-of-the-art Boyd multi-use indoor practice facility, which "will touch almost every program across UNLV athletics, [benefiting] both men’s and women’s sports alike." 

University of Rhode Island alums Thomas and Catherine Drury recently made a $1 million gift toward renovations to the URI Athletics complex. It represents one of the first gifts supporting the major fundraising initiative to make significant upgrades to several athletic facilities, the school announced this week. The project aims to transform the student-athlete experience, offer enhanced fan experiences, and provide expanded community access.

Boise State University on Tuesday announced its athletic department had received a $1 million gift directly for the Bronco football program from a donor who asked to remain anonymous. According to Boise NBC affiliate KTVB, the announcement from director of athletics Jeramiah Dickey marks the 14th seven-figure commitment from 10 different individuals or families since the launch of the Lyle Smith Society in December 2020.
