Fundraising Friday: Alum's $5M Gift to Jumpstart Expansion of 1960-Era Fieldhouse

East Carolina University head football coach Mike Houston and his wife, Amanda are investing $100,000 toward  the realization of the Isley Indoor Performance.Center. According to the donation announcement Wednesday at ecupirates.com, the proposed 101,000 square-foot Isley Center will feature a synthetic turf football practice field, along with amenities such as LED lighting, a scoreboard, a sound system and graphics. The facility, which will be constructed atop the current multipurpose turf field adjacent to the existing football turf practice facility, will be accessible to all sport programs for training purposes.

Valley City (N.D.) State University announced Wednesday the largest gift in its history. Class of 1967 graduate Gary Tharaldson and his family have given $5 million as part of the Forward Together Capital Campaign. The campaign supports much-needed facility upgrades and student scholarships. The Tharaldsons' gift will help jumpstart an expansion to the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, which serves as VCSU’s main athletic building. The facility was built in 1960, when VCSU had 111 athletes. Today, there are almost 300 Viking athletes on campus, according to the announcement at vcsu.edu.

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte raised a record $687,966 to support Charlotte Athletics during the university's ninth annual Niner Nation Gives Campaign, the department announced April 24. This year, Charlotte saw a 56.5 percent increase in contributions and a 41.7 percent increase in the number of gifts received from 2023's Niner Nation Gives Campaign. The 2024 campaign raised the $687,966 from 1,583 gifts, which represents a sizable improvement from last year's numbers of $439,351 from 1,117 gifts.
