Hosting Logistics Push FIFA World Cup to 2022

The FIFA World Cup will be postponed until 2022 because of logistics related to hosting, according to an Associated Press report

The AP reported that Japan withdrew from hosting the seven-team tournament planned for December because of coronavirus restrictions. South Africa also had to turn it down because the country needs to get more of its people vaccinated.

Sources familiar with the planning told the AP that FIFA is considering holding the World Cup in January or February. The AP said the source spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it.

Qatar could host; it would help the Gulf nation test venues for the men’s national teams’ World Cup that starts in November 2022, according to the AP report.

FIFA already has plans to hold the Arab Cup competition in December in Qatar as part of World Cup preparations.
