HS Cheerleading Coach Resigns Amid Allegations of Inappropriate Behavior

A Monroe (Mich.) High School cheerleading coach who was placed on leave amid allegations of inappropriate behavior with a minor has resigned. 

Monroe Public Schools superintendent Andrew Shaw said in a statement that the coach was placed on leave at the end of the school year, noting that the Monroe County Sheriffs Department is investigating the allegations. 

"The case remains under investigation," sheriff Troy Goodnough said. "Upon completion, it will be sent to the Monroe County Prosecutor for review."

The allegations of the coach's behavior surfaced in the fall, but at the time the Goodnough said his office found no credible evidence. The allegations resurfaced later in the year, and sheriff's officials and Child Protective Services still found no credible evidence again. 

"Student well-being is a priority in our district, and concerns of this nature are taken very seriously," the superintendent said in his statement. "Our high school administration took the appropriate steps each time rumors surfaced, and along with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office investigated thoroughly.

"In each case, until the most recent, there was no supporting evidence. I thank the MHS Administration and the Sheriff’s Office for their diligence."

The Detroit News reported that officials finally received credible evidence on June 7 that indicated the rumors could be true. The district then contacted the sheriff's office and the coach was placed on leave. 

Shaw is asking the community for patience as the investigation continues to move forward. 

"People want to have all of the information before the investigation is complete and will jump to conclusions without all of the facts or information," he said. "I ask that the community allow the Sheriff's Office to complete the investigation. These matters take time."
