The South Carolina High School League has fined Myrtle Beach High School nearly $8,000 for violations involving incomplete paperwork that resulted in eligibility issues for three student-athletes during the 2024-25 academic year.

As reported by The Sun News of Mertyle Beach, 14-year athletic director John Cahill had been placed on administrative leave May 7 amid an investigation "due to failure to complete job responsibilities" before resigning June 30.

The SCHSL fined the high school “due to issues related to eligibility, mainly stemming from incomplete paperwork,” an email from Horry County Schools District spokesperson Lisa Bourcier to The Sun News said.

According to Myrtle Beach CBS affiliate WBTW, the school was initially fined $10,250, but appealed it and was granted a $2,500 reduction, Horry County Schools said. Myrtle Beach High School’s final fine is set at $7,750.

“Both Horry County Schools and Myrtle Beach High School express their gratitude to the League for considering the appeal and reducing the fine, acknowledging the school’s proactive approach in self-reporting the issues and their ongoing efforts to standardize processes to rectify concerns within the athletic department following the 2024-2025 academic year,” the school district’s news release stated.

Wednesday's release added that Joe Quigley will take on the role of interim athletic director.

“Mr. Quigley is a respected figure in Horry County and throughout South Carolina, recognized for his outstanding leadership in athletics and his dedication to serving the surrounding communities,” the release stated. “He will offer essential support and guidance during this transitional phase at Myrtle Beach High School.”
