A Marshall (Texas) High School cross country athlete has died after collapsing at practice on Aug. 18. The University Interscholastic League (UIL) is investigating the circumstances of her death.

According to CBS19, Estefani Cabrera was 15 when she “suffered a medical emergency” during practice. A call was made to 911 from the school campus at 4:05 p.m., and Cabrera was reported to be unconscious after a two-mile run. Callers reported that she may have suffered a seizure. Cabrera was first taken to a hospital in Marshall, but was later transported to Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport.

UIL spokesperson Julia Zachary said in a statement, “UIL is aware of the tragic passing of a student-athlete following a medical emergency at a cross country practice in Marshall ISD. District officials have been in contact with UIL staff, and we offer them our support as we await additional information. Our thoughts are with the student’s family, teammates, and the Marshall community as they navigate this tremendous loss.”

Marshall ISD will be required to submit a report of all relevant information to UIL, as the organization requires reports of all catastrophic injuries that take place at practices or competitions.

CBS19 reported that it was 97 degrees in Marshall on Aug. 18, and the heat index ranged from 105 to 110 degrees.

According to UIL policies, schools must “monitor conditions using the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, which factors in temperature, humidity, wind, and solar radiation.” Those tests should tell coaches and staff when it is safe to practice outdoors and when they need to remain inside.

Marshall High School released a statement on Cabrera’s death that said, “It is with profound sadness that we share that one of our Marshall High School students passed away after experiencing a medical emergency on August 18, 2025. With heavy hearts we ask the Marshall community to join us in lifting up the student’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this unimaginably difficult time. To support our students and staff, Marshall ISD counselors will be available on site today at Marshall High School. We encourage anyone needing comfort and support to utilize these resources. Above all, please keep the student’s family in your hearts.”
