The NCAA has a flagged a student worker in the Tennessee athletics department for using a a sports betting app.
According to Knox News, which obtained an internal athletics department report through a public records request, the student employee in the UT sports information department placed a single trade on the Super Bowl using Kalshi.
The was the second time in a year that a student at UT has been flagged for such an offense.
The student who was cited said that he was doing a favor for a friend. As he and friends were getting ready to watch the Super Bowl, one of the employee's friends asked if he would sign up for Kalshi so he would receive a $25 referral fee.
According to Knox News, the student worker created a Kalshi account. His friend gave him $40 to place a single trade on the Super Bowl to activate the account. Then the student worker deleted the Kalshi app and sent the remaining $22 from the account back to his friend. The student worker never used his own money.
The bet violated NCAA policy, which prohibits student-athletes, athletics department staff members or other athletics-related employees from gambling on sporting events.
Both were Level III violations, a general term that the NCAA rulebook calls a basic breach of conduct. Level III violations are common and routinely reported by athletics departments at every school. They often result in minor penalties, as was the case in this instance.
The sports wager was placed as a favor and did not involve UT teams, so the university did not fire the student worker. He underwent further training, finished the spring semester working in sports information and transferred to another school.
