Two separate instances of on-field fighting this week resulted in large-scale suspensions at high schools in both Georgia and Kentucky.

According to USA Today, in the postgame handshake line after a close 10 to nine game between Georgia’s Grayson High School and Florida’s Carol City High School, teams exchanged words and the situation escalated. Soon, football players were shoving and punching each other at midfield. Multiple fights splintered off.

A video taken of the incident in Loganville, Ga., shows one Grayson student-athlete being pushed to the ground and several Carol City student-athletes surrounding him, hitting him while he’s down. Coaches intervened in that group, separating the players.

The Georgia High School Association and Florida High School Athletic Association jointly announced disciplinary action for the players involved, suspending four Grayson High School players for one game, four Carol City players for the rest of the season, and nine Carol City players for five games.

"Identifying all participants was difficult because the game had ended and there was no video available showing the entire field," GHSA executive director Tim Scott said. "As emphasized in the joint statement, participation in high school athletics is a privilege that carries a responsibility to demonstrate respect, self-discipline and good sportsmanship. Competitive excellence should never come at the expense of sportsmanship, respect or safety. The final whistle ends the competition, but the responsibility to demonstrate good sportsmanship does not end with it."

To the North, a total of 26 football players between two Louisville, Ken., schools were suspended for a fight that ended their game early.

In the fourth quarter of the Ballard High School and Fern Creek High School football game, a Ballard player threw a punch at a Fern Creek player. The altercation escalated and drew in several other athletes. The fight was broken up, but officials ended the game for everyone’s safety.

As a result, 14 Ballard student-athletes and 12 Fern Creek student-athletes have been suspended for one game. Athletic director Troy Johnson told the Louisville Courier Journal he expects fines from the Kentucky High School Athletic Association for the incident as well.

"We continually train our student-athletes to handle high-emotion moments properly," Johnson said. "And we appreciate that the vast majority of our team remained on the bench. Coaches and staff on both sides did a great job containing the incident, and any student-athlete who left the sideline will be disciplined accordingly."
