The Southeastern Conference handed down a $500,000 fine to the University of Kentucky Wildcats for violating conference policy on fans storming the field.

According to CBS Sports, after the Wildcats completed a two-point conversion to beat LSU in overtime on Saturday, fans and students poured out of the stands and onto the field to celebrate the school’s first home win over a top-10 team in several years. It is Kentucky’s second victory over a top-10 opponent this season.

The SEC’s stance on field storming states: "institutions shall limit access to competition areas to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel and properly credentialed or authorized individuals at all times. For the safety of participants and spectators alike, at no time before, during or after a contest may spectators enter the competition area."

Previously, the conference instituted an escalating scale of fines for field storming, with repeat offenders paying higher prices. First-time field rushing incidents cost schools $100,000, then $250,000, and finally $500,000 for any further field rushing incidents. But, the SEC did away with that system in 2025, opting to schedule fines more directly.

"The motivation was 'field rushing is field rushing, the first time or the 18th time,'" SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said last spring. "The random nature of, if you're the one getting rushed, it doesn't feel good. It might be the first time (it happened) there, but it might be your sixth time in a row, literally."

Kentucky’s $500,000 will be paid to LSU because the field storming occurred in a conference contest. For non-conference contests, the fines are paid to the SEC’s post-graduate scholarship fund.

If the Wildcats continue on their trailblazing path, fans can still rush the field and the school can avoid fines if “all visiting team personnel and game officials are safely off the playing surface prior to fans entering the field or court, then the home institution may avoid the prescribed penalty.”
