American Fitness Index Reveals Country's Fittest Cities

Jason Scott Headshot

The American College of Sports Medicine released its annual American Fitness Index, an analysis of how American cities rank in terms of fitness as measured by factors including personal health indicators and community/environment indicators.

The top 10 fittest U.S. cities, as defined by the AFI, were:

1. Arlington, Va.
2. Seattle, Wash.
3. Minneapolis, Minn.
4. San Francisco, Calif.
5. Madison, Wis.
6. Washington, D.C.
7. St. Paul, Minn.
8. Irvine, Calif.
9. Denver, Colo.
10. Portland, Ore.

The AFI analyzes more than 30 indicators in the two categories of personal health and community/environment. Personal health indicators include both individual health behaviors, such as the percentage of individuals exercising, biking or walking to work, smoking, and eating fruits and vegetables, as well as health outcomes in the city, such as the percentage of people suffering from asthma, high blood pressure, diabetes or obesity. Community and environmental indicators examine how cities’ built environments contribute to the health of their citizens, including how they rank on Bike Score, how many parks and recreation facilities are available, as well as how cities provide funding and policy to support community health.

Each of the individual indicators is weighted to help tabulate a final score for each of the cities analyzed. Data was compiled from a variety of sources, including from such agencies as the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Census and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
