Southeastern Conference commissioner Greg Sankey raised concerns at media days this week about the possible adverse effects that legalized gambling might have on athlete mental health.
Sankey said that going forward, he’d like to see “uniform practices” on college sports gambling in every state, as well as language that eliminates the possibility of in-game wagers or proposition betting.
According to CBS 13 KRCG, Sankey also talked about the connection between sports gambling and mental health, suggesting that players might feel more pressure in instances such as a field goal attempt or 3-point shot.
Sankey called legalized betting "a wave of new reality, which faces all of us in intercollegiate athletics and higher education."
Officiating was also touched on in Sankey’s talk. He said officiating crews will visit each football camp for two days during preseason practice, including sitting in for position meetings and discussing rules and techniques with coaches and players.
