The parents of Boston University student-athletes were recently targeted by phone scammers who posed as police officers asking for money.

According to the local NBC affiliate, the school's police department sent out an alert last week about the scam.

In total the parents of six athletes were targeted, and in each case an unidentified called claimed to be a member of the university's police department. All of the calls were placed around 1:30 a.m. last Friday morning.

In each instance, the caller claimed the student had been arrested and asked the parents to pay a fee using a payment app for costs related to the arrest. Police did not say whether any of the parents paid the requested fees.

Boston University police requested that any member of the university who believes they are a victim of this scam or a similar one and who is on campus contact them.
