An athletic trainer in Kansas has lost his medical license after it was discovered he accessed private medical records of patients who had undergone breast augmentation.

According to The Topeka Capital-Journal, the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts on March 3 announced it revoked the license of Jeremy Goates after the decision was finalized on Feb. 24.

Board of Healing Arts documents indicate that between Sept. 27, 2021, and Feb. 21, 2023, Goates accessed private medical files of which he wasn't meant to have access. Listed below are the various violations he admitted to:

  • Electronically searching for patients seen at plastic surgery clinics.
  • Viewing before-and-after images of patients who had undergone breast augmentation procedures.
  • Accessing patients' private images for personal use.
  • Accessing patient records from home and outside of his workplace.
  • Accessing records that belonged to co-workers, former employees and patients flagged in the system as neighbors.

No criminal charges have yet been filed against Goates.

Two lawsuits have been filed against Goates, alleging that Lawrence physical therapist breached the medical data of more than 400 people. The Journal notes that the suit doesn't identify Goates by name, but the dates and actions line up.
