A former Texas high school student-athlete, Karmelo Anthony, has been convicted of murder following an April 2025 incident in which he stabbed a fellow track athlete during a meet. Anthony has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.
In April 2025, Police were called to David Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas around ten in the morning, responding to reports of an altercation between two students. Anthony had reportedly stabbed 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, a junior at Memorial High School. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but Metcalf was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.

According to WBALTV, Anthony did not testify at his trial, but several students served as witnesses to the attack. The witnesses reported Anthony had entered the Memorial High School tent at the track, and Metcalf asked him to leave the tent. When Anthony refused, Metcalf “scoffed before Anthony reached a hand into a bag and pulled out a knife.”
Anthony’s lawyers claimed he was acting in self-defense, challenging the student witnesses’ accounts of the incident, but the judge rejected that defense in finding Anthony guilty of murder.
Following the conviction, Metcalf’s mother spoke before the court, addressing Anthony. “You may have just been given a sentence of 35 years,” she said. “You should feel lucky, because I’ve been sentenced to a life without my son.”
According to NBC News, throughout the past year as Anthony’s team prepared for trial, he posted a $250,000 bond, and he was placed under house arrest, but he did graduate virtually from the Frisco Independent School District. Those close to Anthony said he was “distraught” after the April 2025 incident. Prior to sentencing, Anthony’s mother spoke on his behalf, saying he was “very sorry” for what he did.
