A Guntersville High School football coach has resigned after he was arrested for public intoxication at a football jamboree event in Arab, Ala., claiming to be a reporter and attempting to gain access to restricted areas.
According to AL.com, Jerry Fulks was the defensive coordinator and associate head coach at Guntersville High School.
Fulks and several other Guntersville coaches were in attendance at the jamboree — a preseason scrimmage that allows multiple high schools to test plays in shortened quarters — to scout out the school’s week-one competition when Fulks allegedly approached officers, told them he was a reporter, and attempted to enter a sideline area. The officers suspected that Fulks was intoxicated, arrested him, charged him with public intoxication, and booked him into the Marshall County Jail.
According to WHNT, police did confirm that Fulks was intoxicated upon further investigation.
The Guntersville (Ala.) City Board of Education subsequently convened an emergency meeting, during which time Fulks submitted his resignation.
“Effective immediately, Mr. Fulks is no longer employed by Guntersville City Schools,” said the Board of Education in a statement. “Because this is a personnel matter, Guntersville City Schools will not comment further regarding the circumstances surrounding his resignation.”
Guntersville will still play its scheduled game against Arab High School this Friday.
