After being placed on administrative leave on Wednesday, Sept. 30, Arizona State University men’s hockey coach Greg Powers is officially exiting the team. Powers has not been terminated. ASU will pay Powers $1.3 million in three installments through August 2028.
According to People, $1.3 million represents 75% of Powers’ remaining contract, which began July 2022, including $85,000 in unpaid bonuses and 176 hours of accrued leave time.
The agreement protects both ASU and Powers, as attorney Pete Mayer said in a statement, “It has protections both ways. It has protections if he is fired without cause. It has protections for him. It has protections for the university if he just decides to depart.”

The personnel change comes in the wake of the Aug. 20 collapse of Matthew Mayich, a sophomore defenseman and Ontario native who transferred to ASU from Clarkson, located in Potsdam, N.Y. The 21-year-old Mayich collapsed during an outdoor workout on the first day the NCAA allows official activities. He suffered from exertional heat stroke that reduced flow of oxygen to his brain and is unlikely to recover

ASU told KTAR News that Powers' final day of employment was Oct. 16. Because the separation was mutual, the two parties “agreed to the contract modifications.”
