Around 1 a.m. Saturday morning, a westbound SUV crossed the median in Hellam Township, Penn., and collided head-on with a school bus carrying 21 Eastern York football players, 3 coaches and an athletic trainer.

Senior offensive/defensive lineman Carl Carbaugh told the San Francisco Chronicle that the SUV “flipped over the median” before colliding with the bus, adding that the players “had to evacuate through side windows because the front of the bus was caved in.”

According to Hellam Fire Chief Eric Strittmatter, the team was headed home after a game in Martinsburg. While none of the student-athletes were injured, the bus driver and two coaches were taken to the hospital.

In a press statement, Superintendent Darla Panowski said, "Although no students were physically injured during the accident, the district will have a crisis team in place on Monday at Eastern York High School for any students, parents or staff who may need assistance.”

The driver of the SUV is reported to be Jasmine McCarter, 23, of York, who died Saturday of multiple blunt force trauma. The SUV had no other passengers, and the collision was ruled accidental.
